Frustrated by the poor quality of trim tools, potter Bob Dolan began tinkering in his studio to make a trimming tool that he could sharpen and even more importantly one that could hold an edge. Not too long after Bob was enjoying his creations in his studio finally satisfied with a trimming tool that could deliver the results he expected.
During a workshop by a visiting artist, Bob opened his tool kit to a surprising response. Other artists were craving high quality tools too! Bob agreed to make some more tools based on these requests. Pretty soon orders began floating in from all over the world and Bob realized he was spending more time making tools than using them!
Little did Bob know that over the next 20 years these Dolan Tools would gain the reputation as the finest tools in the world for ceramic artists and enthusiasts.
Dolan Tools are made of top quality high carbon knife steel and fine hardwoods. These tools allow the artist to achieve unparalleled results with minimal frustration. Due to the tempered steel that we use, our tools are razor sharp when purchased, stay sharp longer and can be re-sharpened with ease in order to continue delivering the results that artists demand.
For almost 20 years the name Dolan has been synonymous with dependability and durability. We've been able to provide those in the ceramics community with the high quality tools that they deserve in order to achieve the results they desire because we understand that ceramics is about more than just the clay. Our tools reflect that understanding because our everyone in our family is an artist first and a toolmaker second (although lately we've been spend more time in the workshop making them than in the studio testing them).
If you've never had the opportunity to try a Dolan Tool please contact your local ceramic supplier or contact us and we'll be happy to assist you. We at Dolan Tools believe that with the right tools, anything is possible.
FAQ
Q: Do Dolan Tools last forever?
A: Unfortunately nothing lasts forever. The same goes for Dolan Tools, however, we constantly hear from artists that have been using the same tool for over 10 years and is still delivering great results.
Q: Why do the tools rust?
A: Dolan Tools are made from a high carbon knife grade steel. The high carbon content, especially in wet environments like a studio, means that the steel will corrode. This shouldn't affect the performance of your Dolan Tool and can be quickly removed with sandpaper, or steel wool.
Q: How can I prevent rusting?
A: By using them every day. While continual use may be the best prevention, it may be impossible to stop corrosion all together. You can significantly slow the rust by cleaning your tools when you are finished using them and storing them in a dry place. Another tip is to periodically coat them with oil (any oil will do), especially if you aren't going to be using them for a while.
Q: Will Dolan Tools shatter if I drop them?
A: No. Because Dolan Tools are made of a tempered steel they are incredibly durable without being brittle. Keep in mind, however, that they will break before they bend. So if you try to tweak or adjust the shape of a tool you will break it. If there is something you want modified just contact us and we'll be happy to do a custom order to your specifications.
SHARPENING
Sharpening your Dolan Tools is easy and by keeping your tool sharp you will lengthen its working life considerably.
Dolan Tools will take a razor sharp edge and unless caution is exercised serious injury may occur. Remember these tools are essentially fine knives bent into tool shapes.
We recommend three different ways of sharpening your tools. One, use an oil or water whetstone. Two, use a diamond file. Three, send your tools back to us and we will restore their edge.
Under no circumstances use any power tools or any other process that will heat up the steel. Dolan Tools are made with great care and heating the steel will destroy the temper resulting in a tool that will never hold its edge again.
If you have any questions, please contact us and we will be happy to help you.
